Daiso Wallpaper and a Window Frame from the Scrap Pile

Day seventy-four. Tomorrow the kitchen arrives — sink, counters, laundry tower — so today was staging, plus two satisfying acts of material recycling.

The scrap-pile window frame. The window beside the kitchen bay kept its original frame for the house’s legacy — but the aged surround was too rough to leave and too fragile to putty into perfection. Answer from the leftover-lumber pile: a new timber frame, cut and fitted over the GCS board around the opening, reading as intentional trim. The principle we keep re-learning: preserving legacy doesn’t mean displaying every scar — frame the history, cover the mess.

The Daiso solution. Above the main window ran a zone that had defeated both putty and paint planning — patchy substrate where neither would ever finish clean. The undignified, correct answer: sticker-backed wallpaper from Daiso. Applied in minutes, it closed the zone into a flat, quiet surface — directly under a downlight, and it reads as deliberate design. Pride is not a finishing material.

Plumbing pre-staged. For tomorrow’s installers: the laundry drain cut down below counter height so the sink cabinet clears it, and a second tap point added via PB pipe fittings — sink supply extended to serve the laundry tower beside it. Also settled: the induction range gets its own dedicated circuit rather than the counter outlet. High-draw heating appliances sharing a general outlet with a microwave and washer is how breakers trip nightly — or worse.

The exterior turns. And the day’s volume win: Manjae, a helper found through Karrot, drove the exterior repainting to 70% in a single day — the outside walls catching up to the finished interior at last. The house is being closed out from both directions now, inside meeting outside somewhere around the window frames.
