Free Bricks, a Box of Bacchus, and the Art of Hiring Strangers

Day seventy-five. The site shed its construction skin — and we wrote down what two months of hiring strangers has taught us.

The two-truck sort. Everything left on site sorted into keep and go. Truck one — our father’s — carried the keepers to the countryside in Hongcheon: scaffolding, work tables, ladders, cement, and every piece of lumber worth a second project. Truck two, a hired hauler, took the true junk: pallets, offcuts, the sediment of 75 days. Full truck by volume, light by weight — ₩100,000, when a heavy mixed load runs ₩200,000–300,000. (Waste pricing is a weight game; we’ve become connoisseurs.)

The brick economics. The leftover bricks got the elegant exit: a free giveaway listing on Karrot. The taker came, loaded them himself, and left us a box of Bacchus (Korea’s beloved energy tonic) in thanks. Disposal fee: zero. Loading labor: zero. Net: one very Korean transaction where everyone bows and everyone wins.

The hiring doctrine. Today’s helper — a lifetime supermarket owner, methodical and tireless — crystallized our Karrot day-labor rules, refined over ~50 screened applicants:

1. Select for reviews, age, and adjacent experience — not youth and visible muscle. People still choosing to work through the platform in their fifties tend to be the self-starters.
2. Hand over a whole task, not a helper role. “All waste sorted and loaded” beats “assist me” — autonomy multiplies output.
3. Keep a bench. Rate workers on diligence, finish quality, and work-sense; the good ones go in the contacts list for instant recall.

And the kitchen began: sink base cabinets set level, built-in refrigerator seated in its slot. Counters come tomorrow. The site that shipped its scaffolding out in the morning was installing cabinet hardware by evening — the two halves of day seventy-five, and of this whole phase.
